Actor/singer, Jussie Smollett’s Break Out marks a powerful return after a seven-year hiatus, blending soul, R&B, and introspective storytelling in a 10-song set. The album is released via his own Music of Sound in partnership with Dallas Austin’s Rowdy Records. Smollett leans heavily on David Michael Ott as his primary creative collaborator, and taps legendary musicians such as James Gadson (drums) and Curtis Williams (horns) to give it a warm, organic feel. The mixing was handled by veteran engineer Brian “Big Bass” Gardner, known for his work on Off the Wall and Thriller. Among the lead singles is the title track “Break Out”, which set the tone for his comeback. Another single, “Some Things”, had already climbed to No. 1 on the iTunes R&B charts ahead of the full release. Standouts later in the album include “Suspect One,” praised for its laid-back, soulful beat, and “500 Mobsters”, which opens with a gritty edge. Throughout, Smollett’s voice remains silky and emotive, carrying each song’s emotional weight with ease. While not flawless, Break Out succeeds in positioning Smollett as an artist reclaiming his narrative and regaining momentum in the music space.
