R&B singer-songwriter Joyce Wrice delivers a deeply personal, soul-stirring body of work with her album Machiko, named after her beloved late grandmother. Deeply rooted in 90s-inspired R&B, breezy West Coast funk, and smooth contemporary soul, the project serves as a heartfelt tribute to her Japanese heritage, family roots, and personal growth. Driven by magnetic lead singles like the sultry “Best Thing” and the infectious, groove-heavy “Overtime,” the record maintains an effortless, warm momentum from start to finish. A carefully selected group of features enhances the album’s rich texture, highlighting guest appearances from rap star Duckwrth, singer-producer Terrace Martin, and R&B favorite Devin Morrison. The album’s production landscape is masterfully anchored by longtime collaborator D’Mile alongside additional sound architecture from Terrace Martin, M-Phazes, and KAYTRANADA. Together, the production team layers crisp drum programming, warm electric keys, silky basslines, and intricate guitar riffs beneath Wrice’s effortless falsetto and multi-layered vocal harmonies. Blending smooth, two-stepping grooves with intimate, reflective balladry, the arrangements provide an elegant backdrop for her confessional storytelling. Ultimately, Machiko stands as a beautifully crafted, emotionally resonant body of work that celebrates legacy while showcasing Joyce Wrice at the height of her artistic craft.
